Artist Statement: In the early 2000s, I began making artwork that expressed my concern over the extractive relationship we have towards our planet and towards the feminine. Ex Matris is the personification of our earth: through the figure of a woman with all of the nurturing elements being cut from the body, the interior patina evoking the cave paintings of Lascaux and the exterior akin to the coloration and texture of a tree. The thin mask-like female husk serves as a counterpoint to Rodin’s male Mask of Sorrow.

Wood in Flight: Reclaimed and Transformed From Pepperwood Preserve by Catherine Daley, 2017, Granite, Bronze & Charred Wood, 16-1/2 x 9-1/2 x 6-1/2

Artists statement: Salvaged from an iconic oak tree on Three Tree Hill in Pepperwood Preserve, the bark is transformed and renewed into bronze. I purposefully kept some of the wood embedded into the metal. Although Pepperwood has burned extensively more than once, the wildlife and vegetation are making a remarkable recovery. The data from the fires is being studied by Pepperwood scientists with the hopes of understanding and preventing these types of fires in the future.
