Douglas Ballou
Douglas Ballou (Berkeley, CA. 1951 – )
Doug Ballou’s artwork is wonderfully unique. Although academically trained, his output has the freshness and freedom from art world trendiness of an outsider artist. His materials and styles vary widely, yet the results are unmistakably his own. Whether a loose spontaneous abstract painting, a tightly organized mandala painted on a mirror, or a sculptural assemblage of amazing found objects, you know you’re in the presence of a Doug Ballou creation. – Dennis Calabi

Douglas Ballou was born in Oakland, California in 1951, and raised in Berkeley. Douglas attended the California College of Arts & Crafts, earning a BFA in drawing, painting, and printmaking in 1973. He now lives, works, and plays in the North Bay Area, and has studied and collected Native art from around the world. Artworks from the Americas, Oceana, and Asia are his favorites, and have had the strongest influence on his own work. Douglas has also done numerous abstract paintings on tabletops for local cafes, such as the Water Street Bistro, and the Aqus Café, both in Petaluma, and shows his paintings and masks in several local venues.
