100 YEARS OF BAY AREA ART

The San Francisco Bay Area has produced a rich and varied art legacy. Its natural beauty and reputation as a progressive oasis on the western frontier have always been magnetic to artists. Unfortunately, the gallery representation and promotion necessary to drive patronage have historically failed to keep pace with artistic production. This imbalance may have actually enhanced creativity, since pandering to a commercial market which doesn’t exist would be pointless. In any case, much Bay Area art of the last 100 years has a flavor unique to the region.

This exhibition is not intended to be an encyclopedic survey, but rather a very personal selection of artists and styles. 100 Years of Bay Area Art Exhibition Opening!

This exhibition is not intended to be an encyclopedic survey, but rather a very personal selection of artists and styles. A few of the many artists included are Minerva Chapman, Perham Nahl, John Langley Howard, Louis Siegriest, Edna Stoddart, Edward Hagedorn, Dorr Bothwell, Robert McChesney, Paul Beattie, Genevieve Barnhart, Nathan Oliveira, Mary McChesney, Roy De Forest, Mary Tuthill Lindheim, Walter Kuhlman, Karen Green, Carol Peek, and Easton.

An opening reception will be held on Sunday, March 11, from 1 to 4. We will also participate in the Petaluma Galleries Second Saturday Art Walk (March 10, 4 to 7.)

FOR THE LOVE OF ART

FOR THE LOVE OF ART, an artful and culinary love affair is making its 2nd annual rendezvous through downtown Petaluma on Sunday, January 22nd from 5-9pm. With a theme of Alice in Wonderland, the passionate gallery tour winds its way through some of Petaluma’s most notable businesses and galleries, showcasing pointe shoe art pieces and ballet costumes in its annual fundraiser for Petaluma City Ballet. Bring your appetite, for the mouthwatering culinary delights from some of the area’s best foodie hot spots will leave you craving more. Another tasty treat to look forward to is a live performance by John Allair (who is best known for his work with Van Morrison) and a dance performance by the ballet school.

Participating Businesses and Galleries include: Art WithOut Labels, Calabi Gallery, Haus Fortuna, Pelican Art Gallery, Petaluma Arts Center, Riverfront Art Gallery, Viva Cocolat. Tickets for the event are $30/single, $50/double. For more information or to purchase tickets, check out petalumacityballet.org.

Shuttle Vans on site help move guests from gallery to gallery. Gallery tours begin at 5PM, Petaluma City Ballet dancers perform 8PM, John Allair from 7-9PM. Proceeds from the event directly benefit Petaluma City Ballet. Point shoes art pieces and ballet costumes will be on display in selected downtown locations beginning late December 2011 through January 2012.

Calabi Gallery proudly presents Postwar Modernism of the West 2011. This exhibition will showcase works created after World War II, when a fresh new spirit arose from the ashes of the Great Depression and the most horrific war of them all. The immediate post war years are just a starting point – while the works from 1945 – 1950 are justly celebrated as a turning point in art history, the later works created by these artists as they continued to evolve have often been forgotten as the critics moved on to the latest “isms.” Postwar Modernism of the West will open Saturday, November 12^th with an opening reception during the Downtown Petaluma Second Saturday ArtWalk from 3-7pm.

Beyond Borders

Calabi Gallery is pleased to present our new show inspired by Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) and Petaluma’s annual citywide celebration of The Day of the Dead. In addition to art produced south of the border, we are also including art from other parts of the world as well as art made by immigrants to this country, Native Americans, and American expatriates. Of course, any survey of diversity in the arts is incomplete without inclusion of artists who worked outside of the mainstream regardless of their point of origin. While we celebrate the unique contributions of diverse cultures, let us not forget that we are all one and that national borders are artificial boundaries. We ask you to join us in this exploration of diversity and unity. Beyond Borders will open on Saturday, September 10, and can be enjoyed as part of the Petaluma Second Saturday Art Walk, from 4-7pm. We will also host a reception on Sunday the 11th from 2-5pm. The show will continue through the first week of November.
